Brief
Description of project: Egyptalum has started operation since 1975. The
primary aluminum plant consists of 6 pot lines each line contains 93
electrolytic cells. Lines No. 5 & 6, with a total 186 electrolytic cells
are point feeder prebake type (CWPP) and the other four lines No.
1,2,3&4 with a total 372 electrolytic cells are vertical stud sederberg
type (VSS). The total aluminum production in 2005 was 238,000 tons/year.
Brief description of technology: The project will implement the best
available proven technology to reduce emissions of GHGs through reducing
the time of cell upset (anode effect). It is proposed to install a new
algorithm to avoid/minimize what is called “Anode Effect”. During the
aluminum smelting process perfluorocarbons (PFCs), tetrafluoromethane
(CF4) and hexafluroethan(C2F6) are produced during brief process upset
periods, anode effect. In addition Carbon Dioxide CO2 is emitted from
anodes consumption. |
